Playing outside is a great way to get exercise. A lot of kids may not respond to "You need some exercise," so well, but if you suggest they play outside with you (exercise is obviously good and fun for you too) or their friends, that is less preachy. Running around the yard, kicking a ball, playing tag or badminton, these are activities that keep your children moving. It burns calories, makes them sleep better and feels good all around.
Moving
On weekends when kids want to watch TV or play video games, suggest alternatives. There are kids places to go to that have giant, blown up slides etc...that keep kids constantly bouncing around and moving. Whether is it a snowy winter day or a humid summer weekend day, suggest a walk that includes a scavenger hunt (find three white flowers, two acorns, five snowballs) or a treat at the end-walk to the store for some frozen yogurt or a light lunch. If you give your child chores around the house, vacuuming and cleaning burns calories because the kids are still moving. Join them, put music on and sing and dance while you are cleaning - it will seem less like work or exercise. Keeping them (and you) active is key.
Activating
Physical activity should be fun, not hard work, at least when kids are young. Joining sports teams with friends, having neighborhood kids over for a volleyball game or riding bikes on a nice day are all good exercise and great fun. Organizing these activities also keeps you healthy, and shows your kids that you are also interested in them and being fit.
If you have a child that is interested in going to a gym, great, take them with you. Make sure the trainer at the gym goes over all rules about the gym as well as how to use all of the equipment. Make sure this is fun too. Pick out things they would like, for instance, a gym that has a wii or recumbent bikes or a basketball court, and if possible, join in with them.
All of this can be great physical activity that helps them lose weight and/or stay fit and enjoy it. And as always, eat healthy. Avoid a lot of sugar, foods high in fat and cholesterol, and fried food. And enjoy.
